A blend of raw acoustic gestures with tape loops and modular-processed tonal experiments

Outlines is meant to spark momentum - a starting point that nudges a piece forward. It’s our approach to a collection of tonal variations designed to be combined and explored.

Each preset is a sketch - the outline of a musical idea ready to be expanded and reshaped into something larger.

Tape Loop Fun 06

When creating the source material for outlines, we focused on texture, detail and contrast - gathering a wide range of acoustic and synthetic sounds that could interact and form unexpected combinations.

Strings, mallet instruments, flutes and other small acoustic sources were recorded up close to capture the subtle gestures of the instruments. We let ourselves to take it slow, take our time to uncover hidden gems and embrace all the happy accidents that were happening during the time. Finger noise, air, creaks, room and field ambience were all treated as honoured guests rather than trespassers - we wouldn’t have been able to create this library without them.

These recordings were further blended with tape loops, modular experiments and analogue and digital synthesis - forming the palette of textures from which the sounds of outlines emerged.

Building Blocks

Capturing the Source

During the sessions we experimented with different microphones, choosing them carefully to complement the character of each instrument and the textures we wanted to capture. Among them was a pair of ultrasonic microphones capable of recording frequencies up to 100 kHz, producing recordings with exceptional detail.

Much of the material was captured at 192kHz, allowing us to slow the recordings down significantly while preserving high-frequency information. This revealed layers of texture and resonance that would normally remain unheard.

Modular experiments

Working with modular systems is a natural part of our process, so bringing them into the creation of outlines felt inevitable. Processing and resampling sound has long been part of our sonic language, adding another layer that contrasts and complements the raw acoustic recordings.

For these sessions we recorded a separate set of acoustic material. These sounds - together with recordings from analogue and digital synthesisers were mangled through filters, granular processors, delays, reverbs, physical resonators and samplers.

The process often pushed the material far beyond its original form, transforming it into evolving textures and tonal variations that sit somewhere between the source and something entirely new.

Tape Loops

Cassettes and tape loops are another essential part of our DNA. For us they remain one of the most inspiring ways to generate material that feels organic, slightly unpredictable and full of subtle movement - often contrasting beautifully with the raw recordings, modular systems and synthesisers.

Working with real tape is something we deeply enjoy, not only because of the sound it produces, but also because of the completely different workflow it invites. It asks for patience and attention, but more often than not rewards that time with moments that feel impossible to plan.

Foley & Field Recordings

Noise, ambience and subtle textures form another important layer of the palette. Without them, outlines would feel incomplete.

As mentioned earlier, a large part of the recordings were captured with microphones capable of reaching far beyond the usual frequency range. When exploring environmental sounds and delicate textures, this extended spectrum revealed details and movement that would normally remain hidden.

Alongside traditional microphones, we also used contact microphones to capture vibrations directly from objects and surfaces. These recordings often uncovered small resonances, micro-textures and quiet movements, adding another layer of depth and character to the material.

Sound Engine

Two Independent Granular Engines

The engine in outlines is built around two independent granular layers, allowing different playback approaches to run side by side. Each layer runs on its own engine, making it possible to combine traditional polyphonic playback with sequenced or granular movement.

In practice, this means you can run two polyphonic layers, two animated / granular layers, or blend both approaches together. The layers can interact, contrast or complement each other, opening up a wide range of paths to explore.

To keep the workflow intuitive, the engine also features a system of five instrument modes - designed to offer quick starting points while still encouraging deeper sound exploration.

Two Independent Polyphonic Sequencers

Each layer features its own 16-step polyphonic sequencer, available in both playback modes. Rather than acting only as a traditional step sequencer, it can also function as a voice-specific modifier.

This allows you to reshape playback in many different ways - switching sound sources across notes, shifting selected steps up an octave, reversing certain notes, detuning parts of the sequence, or assigning different sample start positions per note.

Each sequencer can also store four independent patterns, which can be switched or modulated in real time. This makes it easy to introduce variation and evolving movement during performance.

Combined with the dual-layer engine, the sequencers can introduce subtle variation or more complex evolving patterns, ranging from simple melodic gestures to shifting granular textures.

FAQ

What is outlines?

Outlines is a Kontakt Player instrument built from raw acoustic recordings, synth recordings, tape loops and modular-processed textures, designed for composers, producers and sound designers.

Do I need the full version of Kontakt to use outlines?

No. Outlines runs in the free Kontakt Player, so the full version of Kontakt is not required.

Which DAWs support outlines?

Outlines works in any DAW that supports Kontakt Player, including Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, Reaper and Studio One.

Can I load my own samples in outlines?

Yes. Outlines allows you to load your own samples into each of the four sound slots. Presets can also be saved with your custom samples for later recall.

What kind of sounds does outlines include?

Outlines features evolving textures, tonal fragments, pulses and organic sound layers created from acoustic instruments, analog and digital synths, tape loops and modular processing.

Is outlines suitable for cinematic music and film scoring?

Definitely. Outlines is designed for film composers and producers looking for atmospheric textures, evolving tones and experimental sound design.

Can outlines be used for sound design and ambient music?

Yes. Outlines is well suited for sound design, ambient music and experimental composition thanks to its vast array different sound sources, evolving textures and tonal layers.

Does outlines include presets?

Yes. Outlines includes a collection of 438 presets designed as starting points for building musical ideas and exploring new sonic directions.
